Red Huskies is excited to host a day of nose work workshops with Walt Feno at the National Capital Trolley Museum in Colvesville, MD on February 22, 2026.
The day will be split into 2 workshops. Each workshop will focus on scenarios and challenges handlers and teams face during or when training for trials. Topics include but are not limited to handling, observation of the dog working through a problem, on the spot/quick decision making based on limited information or due to time constraints, managing the clock, clearing search areas: working in productive and passing through non-productive areas, mitigating stress (handler or dog), refocusing the dog in a distracting environment, knowing when to call finish, etc.
Teams can register for either workshops. Handlers with multiple dogs may consider register two dogs for one workshop or one dog in each workshop. Search scenarios between workshops may be the same but training will cater to the team’s level or experience. This will be accomplished in varying ways (adding or removing part of the search, or hides to/from the search, or making hides more accessible or easier to source. An email will be sent to teams ahead of time to identify each team’s skill level, experience and what they would like to take away from the workshop.
Note: Teams should be familiar with the 3 NACSW target odors (pairing is allowed but should be discussed with Walt and Jen for pairing particular challenges). Teams do not need to have any trial experience. Whether you are a new team getting ready to trial, or you are looking to hone your trial skills, (or maybe you just want to break your cabin fever and have some fun with your dog) this workshop is for you. This is great experience to get dogs familiar with a trial location, different types of flooring, working up/down steps, in/outside trolleys, in warm/cold search areas. Please remember that not all teams will encounter the same challenges or search areas but will experience similar types of scenarios. A hide placed to introduce inaccessible hides to an NW2 team will vary from an Elite team sourcing a deep or high inaccessible hide. Similarly, a team starting in converging odor may experience two converging hides and a SMT team may experience 4 close proximity hides. Alternatively, we can alter the challenge by giving more time to teams working the 2-hide set up and speed search tactics might be applied to ELT or SMT teams working the same 2-hide setup.
